Timber framing Apprenticeship

I am looking to find a timber framing Apprenticeship in the south west of England. I have experience and qualifications in carpentry and building but I want to peruse a career with more variety and options. I have a real passion for learning and want to work for someone who shares my interest in craftsmanship.
I have my own tools and transport and can start immediately.

Structural Engineer / Oak Frame Designer

We currently have the following vacancy:

Structural Engineer / Oak Frame Designer

Location: Swainshill, Hereford

Ł35,000. to Ł24,000 per annum dependant on experience, and aptitude

Role:

This is a unique opportunity for a Structural Engineer to join Oakwrights, who are a specialist constructional carpentry company, who for the last three years running have achieved star status in the Sunday Times Best Companies (to Work For) listing.

‘Embedded’ in, and working as part of an ever expanding team (currently10) male and female frame designers, you will be based at our Hereford Yard in our Design Loft. The Role entails both over seeing the structural design and producing the building control justifications (the ‘Calcs’) for our buildings, and also designing on Dietrich’s state of the art CAD / CAM software to produce a variety of English Traditional, Post & Beam, and Contemporary Oak & Douglas Fir designs, coupled with Infill panels, and our own Wrightwall™ softwood breathing panelled enclosure systems, using all natural materials, Hemp and Wood fibre, pre-manufactured (in our workshop).

Requirements:

Qualifications: Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
This will be an opportunity for either a recently chartered engineer, or a recent graduate / early career engineer working towards professional status.

Experience and skills:

Ideally you would have some experience of Traditional Oak Frame Building, some experience of softwood based modern methods of off-site construction and some experience of CAD design. But additionally you would like to develop a career building Oak Framed Houses. Either way you will need to enthusiastically embrace new ideas, new methods of working, and absorb the extensive stimuli around you.

A strong interest in and commitment to timber engineering and ecological building is essential. As are excellent technical (structural engineering) skills combined with a pragmatic attitude to design encompassing the ‘Oakwrights’ approach to building. You must be enthusiastic, curious, a team worker, and willing to undertake the travel necessary for training and personal development, site, client and research visits. Only the most keen and able graduates need apply.

In order to qualify for this opportunity, you must be in a position of being legally able to work in the UK. This point should be checked out first before you get us too excited about your wonderful skill set, then dash our hopes when we discover that the UK government won’t let you in to work. We have learned from previous experience that it is much better that you check this out from your end, rather than we check it out from this end.

Sadly we are not able to pay interview expenses, nor re-location expenses.
