Joint Busting Specification |
|
The University of Bath shall once again be attending FRAME this year armed with a steel rig and a 10 tonne jack. As in previous years, the timber frame community are invited to invent / devise / concoct their own joints (all timber) & compete against others in strength and deformation. The competition shall follow on from that in St Fagans in 2003. Joints in tension shall be pulled to destruction in the name of science. Entry into the competition shall be obtained following donation of a 'control' joint for University research using a single 25mm pegged mortice and tenon connection (specification below). Following this research testing shall be the competition joints. Here, entrants have a free reign within the following boundaries:
Timbers shall be 150mm x 150mm (600mm and 1200mm) as the 'control' joints (limited by rig configuration)
Connections shall be all timber
A 150mm x 300mm zone shall be provided (dashed below) for 'through tenon joinery' etc (limited by rig configuration)
The competition shall be divided between joints that do penetrate the back face of the mortice member and those that don't. A reminder that a load of 9.9 tonnes was achieved in 2003 by COWCo's wedged through tenon with two pegged side wedges!
