Promoting communication, training and sharing of knowledge amongst those
interested in historic and contemporary timber framed structures

Frame 2009
September 4th to 6th 2009 - Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings.
This year's highlights include:

Rick Collins, the president of the TFG will be talking about a major restoration of an historically important timber frame barn
Anton Coaker, a sawmill owner from Princetown, Dartmoor will be discussing the relative merits and challenges of supplying timber to timberframers, and the future of the timber industry in the U.K
10 Years ago, Karen Hansen designed and built her own timber frame home. She will be discussing her work as a designer, and ten years since completing her oak frame house, what details she might have done differently.
We are very honoured to present Professor Olga Popovic Larsen from the royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in Copenhagen. Olga will be presenting her research on Reciprocal Frames. You can read the review of her book in the current edition of Mortice and Tenon.
Francois Calame from the French ministry of Culture will be presenting a film about timber framing in Macedonia, taken on his recent trip there.
Patrick Stow, Engineer, will be presenting a talk on timber repairs on ancient buildings with reference to recent projects.
Duncan James will be "Making the Timber Sing". In partnership with his wife Alison, Duncan runs a consultancy for Historic Building research. The talk will discuss and illustrate just what makes a timber frame look good and, drawing on ideas from the 15th to 17th centuries it will investigate the subtle rules of proportion and design.
Grigg Mullen teaches engineering at the Virginia Military Institute. He has been instrumental in organizing the rigging for raising on many TFG and CF rendezvous projects.
Charley Brentnall founded Carpenter Oak & Woodland in 1987. After 30 years in the business, Charley reflects on some of the memorable projects that he has been involved with, and chooses a few to take with him to that Desert Island.
Karen Crawford will be discussing the all-important aspects of running a business effectively and competently.
Will Beemer will be introducing a business model for training timber framers, based on his 30 years experience as Co-Executive director of the TFG and owner of the Heartwood School for the Home building crafts in Massachusetts.
Norman Guiver will be dispensing invaluable business advice in his very relevant presentation on 'Closing the Deal'.
Mikkel Johansen, owner of a leading timber frame company in Denmark will be presenting his ideas about marketing the product.
Inspired by Scandinavian techniques, Robin Wood will be running a spoon-carving workshop with knives and axes.
Have a go at wood turning with Ben Orford, specialist maker of hard to source green woodworking tools and real bush knives.
Tom Frazer, a Graduate of the Prince's School of traditional arts will lead a hands on workshop studying the principles behind different cultural design ratios using a pair of compasses.
Brian Williamson, Green wood worker in residence at Westonbirt Arboretum will lead a demonstration and discussion on cleft shingle making.
And from Germany Hannnes Scnelle will demonstrate the Japanese way of hewing beams with a long handled masakari axe, and Michail Schutte will carve a star shaped decorative finial with an adze.

If you won't be able to join the bike ride, but would still like to contribute, you can sponsor online at: http://www.justgiving.com/cycleforsarah
March 2009
The new edition of Mortice and Tenon is now out, with some rather sensational photographs from the Wood Awards winner of the Best Use of British Timber category: The Collector Earl's Garden, Arundel Castle in Sussex. We also have a contribution from Rick Lewis: big toys for big children as he builds replica Seige Engines for the Tower of London. We have a couple of book reviews: 'Building with Cob' and 'Using Natural Finishes' both by Adam Weismann and Katy Bryce. And to complement, Rob Hadden has some solutions to the question of Wattle and Daub in the New Age (of energy ratings and Efficiency standards). How does it cope?
We have had the pleasure of joining Carpenter Oak from Devon on their stand at the EcoBuild 2009 exhibition at Earl's Court earlier this month. The exhibition has expanded in leaps and bounds since its first appearance in 2004. With over 800 exhibitors, 100 Seminars, and 'record crowds' there was a lot going on! Tim Walton, Doug Miles and Barbara Czoch were providing information about the CF, and encouraging people to join.
So a big thank you to Adam Milton, Paul Kirkup and Stuart Voden, for offering us a section of their stand.
