SEASON'S GREETINGS FROM THE CARPENTERS FELLOWSHIP!
AND WISHING ALL A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS 2012 |
News from TaSC: The Carpenters Fellowship Training and Standards Committee
The first cohort of CF Oak Framing Apprentices was inducted onto their two year training scheme a few weeks ago.

This is a truly auspicious occasion. Apprentice training in Oak Framing has now been resurrected after hundreds of years in limbo. Sponsoring companies include Oakwrights, Westwinds, Oak Frame Carpentry, McCurdy's, Paul Reed Conservation, and Carpenter Oak Devon. The eight pictured above will also be joined by two more who could not make the induction date, which was sprung at very short notice. Our first session was hosted by Nigel Howe, our OFTF training Officer, who as well as organising the facilities also treated us to an excellent lunch and refreshments. The apprentices were given an introductory presentation giving them a taste of what lies ahead. Then they were formally registered onto the apprenticeship by our NSAC CITB representative. Following lunch we created stress modelling structures and looked at the various ways in which loads can be transferred through typical cross frames. Then it was onto Pythagoras, Trigonometry and how to calculate hip angles. Over the course of the first 18 months the apprentices will have a wide variety of training provided at locations away from their workplaces. Some of these will be one-day activities and some will be project camps tied into CF projects, where training will be given on a wide variety of framing skills and knowledge, both during the days and in the evenings. These camp events and of course our CF "Frame" Events will provide opportunities for the apprentice group to come together as a team and to produce something special in a guided training environment. At the end of their first day the feedback from the group was exceptional. Both the apprentices and the organisers are fired up and looking forward to bringing this process on and anticipate a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment along the road. TaSC would like to thank the sponsoring companies for their support and for having the vision to put their apprentices forward. The next cohort will be starting at Frame 2012 - the list already has names on it!

| Advice on completing your Tax Return |
Karen Crawford, the CF's own accountant has kindly written a short and informative article which will be of interest to anyone who has to fill out the inland revenue's self assessment tax return. The full article will be published in the next issue of Mortice and Tenon, but as that won't be out till after the returns date for the 2010 - 2011 form which is of course the end of January, CF members can read a copy posted in the members' area of the website.
To log in to the members' area you will need your membership number which you can find on the letter Tim always sends out with the M&T, and the site password.
Forgotten the password? That's fine - please email barbara@carpentersfellowship.co.uk and I will endeavour to get back to you before the end of January!
