West Barn, Barton Grange Farm, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire.

If you want a great day out visit the awe inspiring Tithe Barn at Bradford dating from c.1325. Adjacent to this stands the West Barn, which has recently been repaired by Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust. The original roof to this building was destroyed by fire during the 1960’s, dendrochronology on the remaining cruck timbers embedded in the masonry walls dated these to 1190. Subsequent archaeological investigations have shown this building was formed from the remains of one of the cross porches to an earlier tithe barn, even larger than the existing. The close construction dates of the two tithe barns would seem to indicate that the original building was prone to flooding from the adjacent river Avon, hence the existing Tithe Barn being constructed higher up on the same site.
 Before
Phil Bonney & Andy Ryalls of Phoenix were chosen to supply the new green oak frame for the roof, glazed screen and mezzanine floor. It is intended that the West Barn should form a visitor centre for the site and will open to the public during summer 2003.
